Dalai Lama visits Taiwan despite warning from China
publiziert: Samstag, 31. Mrz 2001 / 09:46 Uhr
Taipei - Exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama arrived in Taiwan Saturday for a 10-day visit despite China's warnings that his trip will further strain Taipei-Beijing ties.
The Dalai Lama was greeted by two lines of officials, monks and Tibetans at the Chiang Kai-shek International Airport.
He and his entourage were driven to the Taipei Fortuna Hotel where the Dalai Lama will speak to the press later in the day.
During his stay, the Dalai Lama is to give talks on Buddhism, pray for world peace, meet with President Chen Shui-bian and receive some 400 Tibetans who live in Taiwan. This is the Dalai Lama's second visit to Taiwan. His last visit was in 1997 to open a representative office in Taipei and to spread Buddhism. There are some 500,000 Taiwanese who study Tibetan Buddhism.
China protested Dalai Lama's 1997 visit and made the protest again this time. On Friday, Chinese Communist Party's organ the People's Daily criticised the Dalai Lama's visit as "a further step made by the Taiwan authorities and the Dalai Lama to divide the motherland". "Taiwan and the Dalai Lama have collaborated since the 1950s. ... His visit to Taiwan is made out of political motive," the daily said.
Dalai Lama was invited by the Taiwan Buddhist Association. Taiwan cabinet's Mainland Affairs Council defined Dalai Lama's visit as "purely for religious reasons". Before departure for Taipei from Dharamsala, north India, where the Tibetan government-in-exile is based, Dalai Lama told reporters his trip to Taiwan was a spiritual visit.
"My visit is not intended to focus international pressure on Beijing. There is no question of ganging up against China," he said. China sees Taiwan and Tibet as inseparable parts of China, and vowed to use force if the two seek independence.
The Dalai Lama had been scheduled to visit Taiwan last year but put off the trip after Beijing renewed contact with him following a gap of two years. Last December, the Dalai Lama confirmed that his brother Gyalo Thondup, had visited Beijing and met with Chinese officials, and he offered to send a delegation to China to present his views on the status of Tibet.
The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 after an abortive uprising against the Chinese Communist troops. From Dharamsala, he leads some 120,000 Tibetans around the world. He won the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for advocating non-violence in seeking freedom for the Tibetan people.
