Enthusiasm but no Beatlemania as hits go on sale in Britain

London - Popstar Elvis Costello was among Beatles fans queuing at midnight in Liverpool to buy the new album of the Fab Four's greatest hits, 1, which went on sale on Monday.

London proved to have a shorter memory, with only 15 fans turning up at midnight at HMV on Oxford Street, which opened for one hour. By mid-morning sales were "picking up", an HMV manager said.

Beatles fanatic Naoto Ito camped outside the shop from 7.30 p.m. on Saturday to become the first person to buy the album in Britain. In Liverpool, Costello joined 100 other fans braving the winter chill to obtain a copy of the album, available as a CD or on vinyl.

"He was among the first 10 into the store so he would have had to queue up for about an hour. People didn't realize it was him until he went into the store as he filed in with everyone else. There were no special concessions made just because he was famous," a spokesman for the HMV record store in the Beatles' home town said.

"But the staff recognised him and asked him to sign copies of his own albums." With 80 minutes of music on it and 27 tracks, the album is the first collection of greatest hits the Beatles have released and comes three decades after the band split.

Eight million albums have been shipped out to shops around the world to cope with the initial demand and the album is virtually guaranteed to be number one for weeks. Most of the Beatles' number one singles in both Britain and the United States, are on the album, although Strawberry Fields Forever is an omission.

The Beatles had previously not put out a greatest hits album, although there were the double albums popularly known as the Red Album (1962 to 1966) and Blue Album (1967-70) with many of their best known songs.

EMI is to spend more than 20 million dollars worldwide on promoting the album, the release of which coincides with the launch of an official website: www.thebeatles.com

Each section of the site is based around one of the 27 tracks on the new album, although only 10 sections were fully functional at the launch. The remainder will come on line over the next three months.

Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Yoko Ono, the widow of John Lennon, have all contributed material, as they did to the first official book on the group, published on October 5.

The Beatles Anthology runs to 368 pages and attemts to set the record straight on several controversies within and surrounding the group, which split up in 1970.

Lennon would have been 60 on October 9. He and Ono were working on new song Walking On Thin Ice shortly they left their New York apartment on December 8, 1980 when he was shot and killed by Mark Chapman.
