Female Indian Sikh leader in hiding as political - criminal drama unfolds
publiziert: Dienstag, 31. Okt 2000 / 10:23 Uhr
Amritsar - A romance, a secret wedding, the bride's sudden death, her mother accused of murder. If that's not enough of a scandal _ add that the mother is a major leader of the Sikhs, an Indian faith known for its warlike traditions.
The saga of Jagir Kaur is front-page news, with Indian newspapers delving into her teen-age daughter's death, her own flight from arrest and the political power struggle among Sikhs in which the drama is unfolding.
Her supporters maintain that Kaur meaning "lioness" s the victim of a conspiracy to thwart her plans to rearrange the Sikh religious calendar a project fraught with religious, political and cultural implications.
Kaur, a former mathematics teacher, is the first woman elected president of the Sikh Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee, which controls the temples of the five century-old religion whose men are known for wearing turbans, long beards and daggers.
Kaur's daughter Harpreet, who was pregnant, died April 20 in mysterious circumstances. The mother arranged for cremation within hours, declared that Harpreet had died of food poisoning and police allege Kaur blocked an autopsy.
Then it emerged that the daughter had secretly married a farmer, Kamaljit Singh. Singh claims Kaur murdered his bride and unborn son because in her exalted new position she didn't want a mere farmer for a son-in-law.
"Harpreet and I were in love since the time when we were in the same school," Singh told The Associated Press. He said they used to meet each day in a Sikh shrine in Begowal, their hometown.
"During her 18th birthday celebrations at her home, we got married," Singh said. "I appeal to God that ... Jagir Kaur get punishment because she has killed my wife and my unborn child."
Singh alleges that Kaur lured Harpreet from his home to a clinic for a forced abortion. He says his wife died 12 days later while being kept in a mansion about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from Amritsar, the Sikhs' holy city in their homeland in northern India's Punjab state.
Punjab's High Court ordered a probe, and on Oct. 3 the Central Bureau of Investigation, India's equivalent of the U.S. FBI, filed a preliminary police complaint. Kaur and six others were accused of causing death and causing a miscarriage without the mother's consent, and of conspiracy, wrongful confinement and destruction of evidence. Each charge carries a maximum 14-year sentence.
Five suspects were arrested within days. Kaur and her armed bodyguard, provided by the Punjab state government, have been in hiding since Harpreet's death. Kaur has said nothing publicly, but her supporters deny the allegations.
"Jagir Kaur is innocent and the whole of the Sikh community is with her," said Ranjit Singh, a resident of Begowal, the village where Harpreet grew up and was later cremated. He called the charges a "politically motivated conspiracy."
Indeed, the scandal is steeped in politics. Since her election, Kaur has been caught up in an angry dispute between Sikh leaders for proposing to change the dates of Sikh religious festivals to match the solar instead of the lunar calendar.
Such a change would end the Sikh tradition of sharing dates for religious festivals with the Hindus, India's major faith. The Sikh faith, founded in 1469 to counter the Hindu caste system, has often been at odds with the country's rulers. Sikhs are about 2 percent of India's 1 billion people. Their men take "Singh," meaning lion, as part of their name, and the women take "Kaur," or lioness.
Sikhism's high priest, Giani Puran Singh banned the new calendar and ordered Kaur excommunicated, but she got him ousted, with help from powerful Sikh political allies.
