Football tragedy not the first in South Africa

Johannesburg - Wednesday night's football tragedy in Johannesburg in which at least 43 people died has been described as an unacceptable disaster.
Orlando Pirates physiotherapist Andre De Villiers called it a devastating event.
"After the referee halted the game, I became involved in trying to treat the injured," he said. "It was terrible.
De Villiers said that he believe the majority of deaths had been caused by crushing.
"The fans were literally crushed to death as more and more fans were trying to get into the stadium," he said. "Those who were already inside could move nowhere else. "Several people were also suffocated. There were so many people crammed together that they could not breathe, and that also caused some deaths." He said that he had counted 29 bodies but that he knew of many more. "I have been involved with Orlando Pirates for six years, and this is the first time that something like this has happened. It is terrible, but it will not cause me to stop working for Orlando Pirates." The fans were killed when tens of thousands of fans tried to force their way into the 60,000-seat Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg to watch a Premier Soccer League (PSL) match between the Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. South African football fans traditionally buy their tickets on match day at the ground, and this often results in many people being forced remain outside once the stadium is filled. There have been several crowd panic incidents at South African football matches. A few years ago, 42 people were killed during a stampede in Orkey at a match between the Chiefs and Pirates. For Wednesday night's match, fans came to Johannesburg from all over the country, many travelling several hundred kilometres to be at Ellis Park. The Orlando Pirates are heading the PSL log, and with only six matches to go a victory over the arch-rival Chiefs would have given them a boost in their attempts to win the championship.
For coach Gordon Igesund, though, winning the championship is the last thing on his mind. "I do not think that anybody who witnessed these terrible incidents will be thinking of football for a while. It really loses its importance when you see people dying at a match," he said. "Nothing is as important as human life, and, unfortunately, over 40 people have lost theirs. That is the only thing that matters at the moment, and we need to make sure that such a catastrophe does not happen again." Igesund said it was impossible to apportion blame at this stage. "I would, however, like to say that fans of both sides behaved very well and probably prevented many more people from dying," he said. "The tragedy did not occur because of crowd violence or disturbance."
