India quake death toll may be as high as 100,000

New Delhi - Food riots have broken out and gangs were on looting sprees in the western India state of Gujarat where the death toll from the devastating earthquake late last week was expected to be in the tens of thousands, officials said on Tuesday.
The Times of India newspaper reported that survivors of the quake in the worst-hit district of Kutch had begun looting trucks carrying food and other relief supplies.
The victims were waylaying relief vehicles on the roads to the worst-affected areas of Bhuj, Bachchau, Rapar and Anjar in Kutch, the newspaper said.
"Things may go out of hand as people are getting quite desperate" a relief official was quoted as saying.
Armed gangs had also begun attacking quake survivors in many areas to steal jewellery and cash, eyewitnesses said. In one incident the robbers stole jewellery worth about 7.5 million rupees (about 150,000 thousand dollars), reports said. The crime spree was made possible by the lack of adequate policing. "Not a single policeman or army man has come to Bachhau since the morning. We lost our roof. Mother nature has already played a cruel joke on us and now we have people looting us," one victim complained. Meanwhile, Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes said the death toll could climb as high as 100,000. He said that more than 200,000 people had been injured.
"If one talks in terms of loss of human life then one is looking at perhaps 100,000 people," Fernandes told the BBC television channel. That would make the Gujarat quake the worst in Indian history. In 1905, 20,000 people were killed in a quake in Himachal Pradesh state. And some 30,000 people died in the Latur and Osmanabad districts of the western state of Maharashtra in a quake in 1993. Only about 6,300 bodies had been found by Tuesday though thousands more were believed still buried under the debris of buildings destroyed by the quake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. The devastating quake left nearly half a million people homeless. By Tuesday, many of them had already spent four days living outdoors.
International rescue teams from Germany, Switzerland, France, Hungary, Britain and other countries planned to continue their operations Tuesday with the help of sniffer dogs and specialized equipment. Several people were taken alive from ruins on Monday. The quake has also set the economy of Gujarat, one of India's most industrialized states, back by several years. According to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the total loss to the economy due to the quake was about 250 billion rupees (about 5.4 billion dollars). A FICCI study said damage to buildings was alone estimated at 150 billion rupees. The state's infrastructure sustained damages worth about 30 billion rupees and factories with a total worth of 15 billion rupees were wrecked
