Indonesian minister tells Wahid's supporters not to swarm Jakarta
publiziert: Donnerstag, 22. Mrz 2001 / 08:23 Uhr
Jakarta - A senior Indonesian cabinet minister on Thursday urged fanatic supporters of President Abdurrahman Wahid not to swarm into Jakarta to hold protests amid fears of bloody clashes with opponents of the embattled leader.
Defence Minister Mohammad Mahfud said he had already appealed to Moslem clerics in East and Central Java, which is Wahid's political base, who have threatened to mobilize more than a million people to "defend" Wahid against moves by parliament to impeach him. The clerics, who are members of the 40-million-strong Nahdlatul Ulama, the nation's largest Islamic group, became enraged when Mahfud told reporters on Wednesday that Wahid would not object to voluntarily leaving office if it were in line with the constitution.
The minister, who frequently makes controversial statements that have to be retracted or clarified, was forced to hold a news conference Thursday morning to backtrack on his previous comments. "I have received a lot of telephone calls from Muslim clerics in East and Central Java and other community leaders asking for confirmation regarding yesterday's statement," Mahfud told reporters.
"I told them their intention of coming to Jakarta in big groups was not a good idea and it would be better if they don't come to Jakarta." Wahid's government, already stretched to the breaking point trying to contain separatist, religious and ethnic violence in far-flung provinces, is fearing a nightmare scenario in which the president's supporters and opponents clash on the streets of Jakarta.
Minor scuffles have already taken place in recent days, mostly between student activists demanding Wahid resign and East Javanese Moslems who support the president, including some who claim they possess magic that makes them immune to bullets. Parliament on February 1 censured Wahid for alleged involvement in two multimillion dollar corruption scandals - the first step toward impeachment - and is already preparing a second memorandum to be issued after the president replies to the first one.
Wahid, a blind Moslem cleric with democratic credentials, has emphatically denied any wrongdoing and refused to resign, despite the fact that his government is impotent and many feel the president has lost his moral authority to lead. Although he had to clarify his statements from Wednesday, Mahfud again asserted that Wahid would resign if it was proven he violated the constitution. „However, if they cannot find a constitutional reason, then the president will remain until 2004," he said.
The battle between Wahid and parliament is part of a larger political struggle among Indonesia's elite, which is divided among those who want democratic reforms and others who want to return to the days of ex-strongman Suharto.
