International press reacts with surprise to yesterday's Swiss vote result

publiziert: Montag, 5. Mrz 2001 / 13:01 Uhr

Bern – The "Yes to Europe" initiative which was voted on yesterday throughout Switzerland was clearly rejected by every canton in the federation. In response to the overwhelming rejection of the pro-Europe initiative, the international press has expressed concerns that Switzerland will continue to remain aloof from the EU for many years to come.

The British newspaper "The Guardian" believes that the result has destroyed any chance of Switzerland entering the European Union within the next ten years. "Der Standard" newspaper in Vienna wrote that the across-the-board defeat of the initiative will only delay the progression of Switzerland's relationship with the rest of Europe. Finally, the German newspaper the "Frankfurter Allgemeine" wrote that the result of the Swiss vote was clearer than expected.
