Left-wing candidates poised to sweep major Brazilian cities in city elections

Sao Paulo - A psychologist-turned-leftist politician is poised to take the reins of South America's biggest and wealthiest city in a mayoral runoff Sunday that could set the tone for the 2002 presidential race.

Four weeks after nationwide municipal elections, more than 25 million Brazilians return to the polls in the 31 cities where no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes _ forcing the two top contenders into a runoff. Eleven of those cities are state capitals, including the major metropolises Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

The biggest prize is Sao Paulo, where polls show Stanford-educated Marta Suplicy of the Workers Party leading two-time former mayor and Sao Paulo state governor Paulo Salim Maluf of the conservative Brazilian Progressive Party. The latest survey by the respected Ibope polling institute gave Suplicy 49 percent of the vote against 34 percent for Maluf. Ibope interviewed 1,200 people between Oct. 21-23 and the margin of error was 2.8 percentage points. "It is highly unlikely he will be able to catch up and overtake Suplicy," said Ibope director Marcia Cavallari. Suplicy first won national attention years ago with frank talk about sex as a TV personality. As a congresswoman, she raised conservative eyebrows for her outspoken defense of abortion and gay rights. But business leaders don't seem worried about a leftist running the nation's economic and financial nerve center.

"The Workers Party no longer scares me," said businessman Mario Amato, the former president of the Sao Paulo's powerful Federation of Industries. A Suplicy victory could also give the Workers Party an important boost in the 2002 presidential election. Other candidates of the Workers Party, known by its initials PT, also lead the polls in the important capitals of Porto Alegre, Recife, Curitiba and Goiania. Nearly 12 million people voted for the party's candidates in the first round - up from about 8 million in 1996 - and the number of the party's mayors has risen to 174 from 112.
