New U.S. administration in no hurry to reassert role in peace talks

Washington - President George W. Bush appears to be in no hurry to reassert a U.S. role in the Mideast peace talks and is content to let the Israelis and Palestinians squabble among themselves without mediation, officials said Tuesday.
There was nary a sigh of discontent at the news that the latest round of negotiations at the Egyptian resort of Taba had broken off after new violence resulted in the deaths of two Israeli businessmen.
With the new foreign policy team in Washington in office only three days and with Israeli elections looming on February 6, there was no concern at the State Department that the United States lacks a presence at negotiations it once tried to shepherd so closely.
"The United States intends to be involved in the peace process, but we don't have any announcements to make at this point," State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said. "The fact that the United States isn't participating in this round in the room doesn't mean we don't have an interest in the situation." Although the Bush administration is not yet feeling pressure to jump back into the negotiations, Boucher cautioned reporters not to "jump to the conclusion that we've abandoned the process".
The Bush administration has signalled that it will not be as closely involved in any negotiations as Clinton and his special envoy, Dennis Ross, and prefer to let the two sides work out their own agreement. "The United States will decide in this new administration on the format and extent of its involvement, and we'll let you know in due time," Boucher said.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak telephoned the new secretary of state, Colin Powell, on Monday to brief him on the Taba talks, Boucher said. It was Powell's first discussion with a Mideast leader since taking office Saturday. Boucher brushed aside published criticisms by the Palestinians about Clinton's mediation efforts, saying, "There's really not much to say at this point."
Boucher was also the spokesman for the Clinton State Department for the past nine months. The Palestinians blamed Clinton's team for being too pro-Israeli and too enamoured of the negotiating process.
