Prostitutes meet to demand legalization

Taipei - Prostitutes and social workers from seven countries are holding an international forum in Taipei to demand the legalization of prostitution, the organizer said Friday.

Nearly 100 delegates are attending the Second International Forum on Sex Workers' Rights and the Sex Industry, said Chung Chun-ju, secretary of Taiwan's Collective of Sex Workers And Supporters (COSWAS). Among them are 15 delegates from six other countries - Japan, Australia, the United States, Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany.

"Carol Leigh, a 50-year-old prostitute in San Francisco, will talk about her fights for legalizing prostitution in the U.S., where prostitution is legal only in the state of Nevada," Chung said. SWAP, an group of Australian sex workers and their supporters, "will share its experience in winning permission for brothels in New South Wales (NSW)", said Chung. After three years' negotiation, SWAP has succeeded in persuading New South Wales residents to allow brothels to operate under certain conditions. NSW residents can ask authorities to close a brothel in their neighbourhood, but they cannot demand its closure on moral grounds. Rosinha Sambo, a thirtyish prostitute from Sweden, will denounce Sweden's law of penalizing clients, rather than prostitutes, which put her out of work in Sweden and forced her to move to Denmark to practice prostitution.

The week-long forum began Monday. Events include song and dance performance for Taipei residents, a street protest, a show of video documentaries made by prostitutes about their life, and penal discussions. Taipei banned prostitution on March 28, shutting nine brothels and putting 42 licensed prostitutes out of work. Many scholars and social workers opposed the Taipei city government's ban, saying it will drive prostitution underground, making it more difficult to control.
