Renewed religious violence kills more than 90 in Indonesia

Jakarta - At least 93 people have been killed in Indonesia's troubled Moluccan islands in the past several days as Moslem militants attacked and occupied predominantly-Christian villages, residents and officials said.

The Moluccans, the once-fabled Spice Islands located 1,800 kilometres northeast of Jakarta, have been engulfed by a 23-month religious war that has killed up to 4,000 people.

The violence broke several weeks of relative calm in the conflict, which has seen security forces sent in to quell the violence take sides based on the religious affiliation, and the arrival of Moslem militants from Java to launch a holy war.

Semmy Waileruni, a legal activist at the Maranatha Christian Church monitoring centre in Ambon, the provincial capital, said by telephone that Moslem attackers stormed Christian villages on remote Keisui island, forcing residents to seek shelter in several mosques.

Waileruni said reports he received from Keisui, which is five hours by boat from Ambon and has little communication equipment, said that hundreds of Christians were forced at gunpoint to convert to Islam, and those who refused were killed. "I received reports that at least 93 Christians have been killed since the Moslem militants attacked those villages on November 23," Waileruni told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Martin Luther, a spokesman for the civil emergency office in Ambon, confirmed that they had received reports of many people being killed in Kaisui, but could not give an official figure. He told dpa that reports from various sources, including residents who fled from Keisui, said more than 100 people had died since the attacks began.

Luther said a 20-man security force sent to the island to restore order had mysteriously failed to land, and government authorities decided to send a warship and more security personnel to Kaisui to investigate. Malik Selang of Ambon's Al-Fatah mosque monitoring centre said the death toll on Keisui from the past week was at 20. He said Moslems had helped save Christians who fled and sought refugee at local mosques on the island.

Local military and government officials could not be reached for comment about the attacks. It was unknown whether Moslem army soldiers or members of the radical Laskar Jihad group were involved in the attacks, as they were in other massacres in recent months. President Abdurrahman Wahid declared a civil emergency in the Moluccas in June, but it has failed to quell the violence. Tens of thousands of people have fled the region, while scores of houses, buildings and places of worship have been torched.

Wahid has accused military and political extremists linked to former strongman president Suharto of arming and funding combatants to destabilize his government, and the conflict spiralled out of control. Numerous legislators have demanded Wahid resign for failing to stop the violence in the Moluccas, as well as separatist movements in two other far-flung provinces.
