Republican veterans find home in Bush cabinet
publiziert: Mittwoch, 3. Jan 2001 / 08:15 Uhr
Washington - The 15 members nominated to be cabinet members in the administration of President-elect George W. Bush reflect his reliance on Republican veterans of past administrations, including associates of his father, former president George Bush. Bush also has chosen four women, two African-Americans, two Hispanics and an Asian- American Democrat.
Below is a list of nominated cabinet members, their ages and brief biographies. All nominees must be confirmed by the full U.S. Senate.
State Department: Colin Powell, 63 - Powell is the son of Jamaican immigrants who rose through the military to become head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War. He was a close advisor to President Bush during the war, he also served in the administration of former president Ronald Reagan.
Defense Department: Donald Rumsfeld, 68 - Rumsfeld is a former U.S. Marines pilot who headed the Pentagon from 1975 to 1977 under former president Gerald Ford. Rumsfeld has held senior positions in several large corporations and is a strong advocate of a national missile defense programme.
Treasury Department: Paul O'Neill, 65 - O'Neill has spent the past 15 years as chairman of the huge aluminum concern Alcoa. He formerly worked in the budget offices of the Ford and Nixon administrations.
Commerce Department: Donald Evans, 54 - Evans is a long-time friend of President-elect Bush from their days as oil entrepreneurs in Texas. He was Bush's chief fundraiser and brought more than 100 million dollars to the campaign.
Justice Department, Attorney General: John Ashcroft, 58 - Ashcroft is a staunch religious conservative who already has roused the ire of liberal and civil rights advocates. Ashcroft lost his Senate seat in November to a dead candidate whose widow will gain the position from Missouri.
Interior Department: Gale Norton, 46 - The Colorado state official is an advocate of property rights who will likely sharply shift U.S. environmental and land-use policies. Norton is relatively unknown and favours opening federal land, such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, to commercial development.
Transportation Department: Norman Mineta, 69 - The only Democratic nominee, Mineta moves from Commerce Department chief to head Transportation. Mineta is a Japanese-American who spent time in U.S. internment camps during World War II before becoming a congressman from California.
Agriculture Department: Ann Veneman, 51 - Veneman would become the first woman to head the massive U.S. agriculture bureaucracy. She was agriculture deputy under former president Bush.
Energy Department: Spencer Abraham, 48 - The Michigan politician lost his bid for reelection to the Senate in November after being targetted by labour activists. Abraham is an advocate for the automobile industry and has supported Bush's call for new oil development in the United States.
Health and Human Services: Tommy Thompson, 59 - Thompson is the long-serving governor of the state of Wisconsin. He was successful in moving millions of citizens off the welfare rolls and into paying jobs.
Housing and Urban Development: Mel Martinez, 54 - Martinez is a Cuban exile who assisted the Bush campaign team in Florida, where he is chief executive for the fast-growing Orlando area.
Labor Department: Linda Chavez, 53 - Chavez is a conservative newspaper columnist who was a civil rights representative during the Reagan administration. She is a Hispanic originally from Texas.
Education Department: Rod Paige, 67 - Paige is a well-respected education administrator from Houston, Texas, where he caught Bush's eye by turning around that city's failing schools system.
Veteran's Affairs: Anthony Principi, 56 - Principi is a Vietnam war veteran who worked in the department during the previous Bush administration.
Environmental Protection Agency: Christine Todd Whitman, 54 - The outgoing governor of New Jersey is a relative moderate who has vowed to "find a balance" between industrial development and environmental protection laws. Bush vowed to make this agency post a cabinet-level position.
