Thousands of Filipinos join rally to demand Estrada's resignation

Manila - Thousands of Filipinos took to the streets on Wednesday to demand the resignation of Philippine President Joseph Estrada without waiting for the outcome of the chief executive's impeachment trial set to start next week.

The protesters included workers and students who held an overnight motorcade from at least seven nearby provinces. They converged at Ayala Avenue in the financial district of Makati and Bonifacio Plaza in metropolitan Manila.

More than 1,500 policemen were deployed in the two rally sites to prevent any violence during the demonstrations amid fears that communist rebels may sabotage the activities.

The rallies signalled the start of a two-day nationwide protest and transportation strike against Estrada. The country's top Roman Catholic leader, Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, urged people not to be indifferent and called on them to join the demonstrations to "rescue" the Philippines.

"The victim on the road is bleeding. We must rescue him. That bleeding victim is our beloved Philippines," Sin said in a statement, referring to a parable in the Bible.

Sin's renewed call for the resignation of Estrada, who faces bribery and corruption charges, was echoed by former President Corazon Aquino and Vice President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the president's constitutional successor.

Aquino called on Filipinos "to revitalise People Power", referring to a four-day revolt that toppled late dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986, and guard Estrada's impeachment trial. "The magnitude of the crisis facing our nation compels all of us to converge anew for a common cause: to restore a sense of morality and accountability in governance," she said in a statement.

In Ayala, businessmen and residents of nearby posh villages welcomed leftist activists carrying red banners referring to the president by his nickname - "Oust Erap" and "Erap: A burden to the poor. Erap Resign".

The wealthy traders later treated the protesters to a "people power" lunch. Earlier, they staged a protest convoy in their expensive utility vehicles around the business district, snarling traffic.

From Ayala and Bonifacio Plaza, the demonstrators marched to Mendiola Bridge outside the presidential palace where they will hold a vigil. They burned an effigy of a crocodile - the traditional Philippine symbol of corruption.

Another group of leftists rallyists staged a traditional Chinese "dragon dance" in the nearby Chinese district of Binondo. But instead of a dragon, they used the guise of a crocodile. "We are veterans of fighting dictators and exploiters," said Crispin Beltran, chairman of the militant labour group, May One Movement. "Estrada is nothing but a barrier that stands in the way of the nation's quest for genuine democracy and freedom."

The protests were held a day after the Philippine Senate tribunal junked a motion filed by Estrada's lawyers to dismiss on technical grounds the bribery and corruption charges against the president and ordered the trial to proceed.

The junking of the motion to quash the charges against the president paved the way for Estrada's trial on charges of bribery, graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust and violations of the constitution to start on December 7.

Jose Flaminiano, one of the president's lawyers, said the defence panel has decided not to appeal the Senate tribunal's decision. The team will also not elevate the matter to the Supreme Court "to avoid charges that we are delaying the process".

Estrada was the first Asian leader to be impeached. The case stemmed from allegations by an estranged friend that the president collected more than 8 million dollars in illegal gambling payoffs and 2.6 million dollars in kickbacks from tobacco taxes.

Estrada has denied all charges, which have triggered mounting calls for him to step down. The 63-year-old former movie action star has expressed confidence he will be acquitted in the impeachment trial. The president would be removed from office before his six-year term ends in 2004 and exposed to possible criminal charges if at least two-thirds of the 22-member Senate finds him guilty in any of the four articles of impeachment.
