U.S. worried about Russian military cooperation with Iran
publiziert: Freitag, 29. Dez 2000 / 20:54 Uhr
Washington - The United States has reacted with alarm to Russia's announcement that it will in future cooperate intensively with Iran in the military arena and will resume supplying that country with arms.
U.S. State Department Spokesman Philip Reeker said the sale of missiles, submarines and other military equipment to Iran represents a threat to U.S. security. He did not rule out the possibility that the United States could impose sanctions on Russia.
But a statement issued by the State Department said that punitive measures would only be instituted if a transfer of weapons were to take place, and that each such case would be thoroughly examined.
According to U.S. law, countries and companies that deliver arms to Iran are subject to an extensive list of sanctions. Those sanctions range from withholding economic aid to prohibiting exports of goods that could be used for military purposes or refusing to support loans from such international institutions as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Sergeyev announced the resumption of military cooperation between the two countries on Thursday after talking with Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Charrasi in Teheran.
Both countries said they wanted to resume the cooperation that they had broken off in 1995 because of a secret agreement between Russia and the United States. "We have agreed to initiate a new level of cooperation between our military forces," Sergeyev said after the meeting.
According to information from Interfax news agency, Russian or Soviet-produced submarines, warplanes and tanks are expected to modernize the Iranian armed forces. Teheran is also said to be interested in buying the most modern Russian air defence system, S- 300, featuring Suchoi Su-25 warplanes. They are also said to be interested in radar equipment.
Because of the election drama in the United States, Russia last month opted out of a secret agreement reached five years ago by Russia's head of government then, Viktor Chernomyrdin and U.S. Vice President Al Gore. The agreement exempted Russia from sanctions in return for its promise not to supply arms to Iran. Russia said it broke the agreement because of positive political developments in Iran.
The United States has repeatedly warned countries against supplying arms to Iran, saying it would upset the military balance in the region.
