Gsteig (BE) – The man who was seriously injured when he was buried by an avalanche on Sunday in the Gsteig region of Berner Oberland, died in hospital earlier Wednesday of his injuries, said investigation officials.

The 48-year old man from canton Valais was skiing with two other people north-east of the Gstellihorns at a height of 2,000 metres above sea level when an avalanche came down the mountain from above the small group. The two other men were able to free themselves from the heavy snow, while the third man was more seriously wounded. According to figures from the news agency SDA, six people in Switzerland have died in avalanches since the beginning of this year’s winter season: three in the Valais Alps, one in Graubünden, one person in Inner Switzerland and one in the Berner Oberland region.
