Bin Laden denies links to USS Cole bombing

Kuwait City - Exiled Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden has denied any involvement in the bombing of a U.S. Navy ship in Yemen last month that killed 17 sailors in an exclusive interview published Monday by a Kuwaiti newspaper.
Bin Laden, who is thought to be living in Afghanistan, also told al-Rai al-Aam newspaper in a telephone interview that he was not connected to an alleged terrorist gang that was caught in Kuwait with explosives that police say had planned to target American military and civilians in the Gulf.
Bin Laden's comments were his first since the United States announced that it strongly suspected him to be linked to the October 13 attack on the USS Cole in Yemen's Aden port.
Bin Laden said that he and his followers "have no intention to attack oil, or civilian, or military targets in Kuwait or in any other Arab country." Al-Rai al-Aam did not say from where bin Laden spoke in the telephone interview, or when it was conducted.
When asked about possible links he may have with people arrested in connection with the Cole attack, bin Laden said "we have no relation with the people arrested, and they do not represent us in any way."
As for U.S. government warnings to its citizens residing in the Gulf region, bin Laden said "this is not our business," while again denying any intention by his group to attack American military assets in the region.
The United States indicted bin Laden for his alleged role in the bombing of two American embassies in Africa in 1998 that killed more than 200 people. He was also cited by the United States as a prime suspect in deadly bombings of U.S. military compounds in Saudi Arabia.
Bin Laden further denied any link to an alleged terror group that was arrested in Kuwait in possession of 133 kilograms of explosives that police said were meant to be used in attacks on Americans in Kuwait as well as in other Gulf states.
"I assure you that we have no organizational or any other connection with them," said bin Laden referring to six Kuwaitis in custody including one in Qatar who is awaiting to be extradited to Kuwait once an ongoing Organization of Islamic Conference summit meeting concludes.
Referring to the Kuwaitis arrested including one Moroccan suspect still at large bin Laden said "the Afghani arena is full of Arab organizations and groups and you cannot just link any Arab to Osama bin Laden just because he is an Arab."
In the past bin Laden has threatened to carry out attacks on U.S. military in the Gulf which he feels has no right "to occupy" the region.
Arrests in Kuwait of the first three members of the suspected terror gang coincided with the U.S. government ordering a heightened state of alert for some 10,000 American troops in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia during the last week of October.
