Clinton, Chirac, Prodi assert trans-Atlantic ties
publiziert: Montag, 18. Dez 2000 / 22:58 Uhr
Washington - President Bill Clinton hosted French President Jacques Chirac and European Union President Romano Prodi at the White House Monday in a meeting to reaffirm trans-Atlantic ties as the E.U. engages in a process of enlargement.
The E.U. leaders emphasized that they expect the United States to remain engaged in European affairs despite the region's expansion eastward.
Chirac said the "relations must change, because the world is changing - and Europe is enlarging. "But we are convinced that there is no future if there is not a strong, strong common action between U.S. and Europe, and NATO is the natural place for it here," Chirac said.
Chirac and Prodi both praised Clinton for his support of Europe's enlargement to include countries of the former eastern bloc. Chirac said Clinton "has been extremely positive for Europe.
"And for that I want to express the gratitude, the esteem, and the friendship of all Europeans for President Clinton," he said.
Clinton said he felt European affairs and the trans-Atlantic relationship were in good shape for the incoming Republican administration to build on. He said he stood behind Europe's continued expansion and the enlargement of NATO.
"I believe that the new administration will find that these developments are all positive, and I think that the relationship between the U.S. and Europe will be positive," Clinton said.
He said there would continue to be "high-class" problems involving trade disputes but he said "that's natural".
"We're not worried about the survival of our democracy. We're not worried about whether we share the same values. So I feel very good about this, and I think the future will be quite good between the United States and Europe," Clinton said.
The three leaders had few policy issues on the agenda. The meeting is one they hold every six months as part of an agreement reached several years ago between the European and the U.S. sides.
The two sides were expected to initial a new mutual agreement on marine safety equipment. They also were to issue new regulations for calibration standards.
