German prosecutors outline case against Fischer
publiziert: Montag, 19. Feb 2001 / 15:04 Uhr
Frankfurt - Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer jetted off to Washington on Monday while prosecutors in Germany outlined details of an investigation into whether he lied during a terrorist trial.
Fischer's trip to Washington represents the first visit to the U.S. capital since President George W. Bush's election last November.
The probe by Frankfurt prosecutors centres on Fischer's testimony last month during the the trial of a former associate, Hans-Joachim Klein.
In particular, the investigation focuses on Fischer's comments he made in court that he never sheltered members of the Red Army Faction (RAF) guerrilla movement during his days, 30 years ago, as a militant street-fighter.
This, however, has been contradicted by accounts made by eyewitnesses at the time and a description contained in an autobiography by a former RAF member, Margrit Schiller. Fischer later admitted that Margrit Schiller may have stayed temporarily in an apartment in the same building and that he may have met her over breakfast. The presiding judge in the Klein trial, Heinrich Gehrke, sharply criticised the probe by prosecutors, decling to rule out political reasons for the probe into Fischer.
In comments published in the "Financial Times Deutschland", Gehrke described the investigation by the the prosecutors as "absolutely unusual." But Hans-Christoph Schaefer, the general public prosecutor for the state of Hesse, where the investigation is based, defended the probe saying that no political directives or wishes had been expressed for holding the inquiry into Fischer's testimony.
Fischer, who has never made a secret of his past as a radical political activist, remains one of Germany's most popular politicans and press reports of his days as a left-wing street-fighting militant have so far done little to damage his high approval rating. The foreign minister's days as an activist have came under the public spotlight recently following the publication of old photographs showing him apparently hitting a policeman during a demonstration.
Fischer, who knew Klein during the 1970s made a highly-publicised court appearance last month when he spoke as a character witness for the accused. Klein was found guilty of three counts of murder last Thursday and sentenced to nine years in jail for his part in the 1975 terrorist attack on an OPEC oil ministers' meeting in Vienna.
The prospect of an investigation into Fischer's court appearance have led to renewed political debate in Germany about his past with calls by members of the opposition for Fischer to stand aside from the Foreign Ministry until the allegations are cleared up. The conservative premier of Bavaria, Edmund Stoiber, on Monday said that the Christian Democrat-led opposition in parliament should consider pressing for an investigation into Fischer's past.
Meanwhile, a leading figure in the Foreign Minister's Greens Party, Claudia Roth, joined other government member in backing Fischer. This follows a strong expression of confidence in Fischer last week from Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
