Lauda heads Jaguar but promises no success until 2003

London - Austrian racing legend Niki Lauda celebrates his return to Formula One this season as new chief executive officer at Jaguar, but the three-time drivers champion does not expect the British team to win any races until 2003.
"I hope we can win races. One has to take into account who we compete against: McLaren and Ferrari are superior over all other teams. We must get closer, which in itself is already a huge
challenge," said Lauda, who won drivers' titles with Ferrari in 1975 and 1977 and with McLaren in 1984.
Lauda's arrival with a three-year contract brings a big name to the British racing outfit, which earned just four points in its disappointing debut season in 2000. "When I was racing I did everything at full throttle while many of the others kept their foot on the brake. I want to bring that mentality to Jaguar Racing," the 51-year-old Lauda said.
"I'm going to put Jaguar at the top of Formula One." Lauda will have Eddie Irvine of Northern Ireland and Brazilian Luciano Burti as drivers, and the native of Vienna believes the team is strong, reminding doubters that Irvine was the runner up to Mika Hakkinen two seasons ago with Ferrari. "He can bring a lot to the team. He is a clever guy with a good brain, and we need to use that for the best. I have to use him and the whole team has to use him," Irvine said.
Lauda agrees with Irvine's comments that there is a special myth about the Jaguar team, just like at Ferrari, where Lauda also served as an advisor and helped the Italians bring in champion Michael Schumacher from Benetton. "They are two teams with a lot of charisma, much more than Mercedes or BMW," Lauda said. But Lauda, who spent his retirement days heading his own airline Lauda Air, said grand prix wins and drivers title for Jaguar are still a ways off.
"Formula One is complicated. Things don't start to happen immediately. The 2001 season is effectively over," said Lauda, who famously returned to racing seven weeks after suffering major burns following a crash in Germany in 1976. "The car which will drive in Melbourne is ready. Now I have to have a close look how it all works and where we can make adjustments. You only find out about that after the first year, so success can't come until the third year," he said.
Jaguar Racing CEO Bobby Rahal is delighted to have Lauda on deck. "Niki's knowledge of all aspects of Formula One racing and his proven credentials as an astute businessman make him the ideal choice for the position. His new role will enable me to clearly concentrate on my objective to develop Jaguar Racing into a championship challenging team," Rahal said. Lauda left Formula One once and came back to win a title with McLaren, Jaguar will be hoping that lightning strikes twice.
