Magazine: second spy scandal witness testifies against FP

Vienna - A second witness has come forward to testify against the right-wing Freedom Party (FP) in the so-called "spy scandal", according to the magazine Format.

The man, named as "Heinz L.", told investigators he had handed over secret police files at the request of FP Party Secretary in Vienna Michael Kreissl. Heinz L., a police officer and member of the FP police union AUF, said there had been several instances per year, according to an advance release of Format's Monday edition.

The policeman said examples of secret information he had handed over included drugs raids and police action against Africans. He said Vienna City FP leader Hilmar Kabas had made use of the information. The "spy scandal" involves alleged FP misuse of secret police files about political opponents, in some cases in court. In 1999 the Vienna FP ran a newspaper campaign against Nigerians as "drugs dealers." The "spy scandal" was triggered by the first crown witness, ex-policeman and AUF functionary Josef Kleindienst, who claimed he had been regularly paid by Kabas to hand over information. L. said that at least two other policemen had been involved. "Entire files" on various persons or issues had been handed over to the FP. The new revelation followed an apparent reprieve for the FP last week when a letter incriminating ex-party leader Joerg Haider was shown to be a forgery. At the weekend, the FP intensified its counter-attack. Party leader Vice-Chancellor Susanne Riess-Passer demanded that all inquiries against Haider be dropped. The FP, which had already attacked the interior minister and demanded the resignation of top police officers investigating the scandal, turned its fire on a judge. FP faction leader in parliament Peter Westenthaler accused investigating judge Stefan Erdei of "bias" and leaking information to the media.

He claimed investigating authorities were close to the opposition Social Democrats, and wanted to "put an end to the FP as a governing party." Westenthaler's predecessor Ewald Stadler, himself under investigation, said FP justice minister Dieter Boehmdorfer should "withdraw" the public prosecutors presently conducting the inquiry. Social Democrat leader in parliament Peter Kostelka retorted that the FP was ever more showing its "totalitarian face".
