More than 600 people have been killed by mine explosions in Rwanda during that period, according to the Director of the De-mining Office, Lieutenant Vincent Haguma.
The mines were planted during the 1990-1994 civil war.
The most affected areas were the northeast Umutara region, northern Ruhengeri, northwest Gisenyi, northeastern Byumba and central Kigali Rural districts.
Haguma told reporters that a major handicap faced by the de-mining office has been the lack of maps showing where the mines had been planted.
The United States has provided financial assistance to the de- mining campaign, and a dozen dogs which sniff out mines.
