Schumacher looks for victory number six
publiziert: Donnerstag, 15. Mrz 2001 / 10:40 Uhr
Kuala Lumpur - Michael Schumacher returns to the weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix without a red wig, but fully determined to stretch his red Ferrari's winning ways to six straight races.
"I can assure everybody that Michael is as competitive as ever. Michael wants to win all the time. Every race," said his Ferrari team boss Jean Todt.
Last year's Sepang race marked the season-ender. Schumacher was already assured of the world championship title, but went on to win the race which also gave Ferrari the constructors' title.
Schumacher, teammate Rubens Barrichello and team officials then sported Ferrari-red wigs at the victory ceremony and further festivities. The Malaysian course has in fact Ferrari written all over it as the first edition of the race 1999 was also won one of their drivers, Eddie Irvine.
Schumacher arrived Thursday from some quiet days on the beach and would like nothing better than to become only the second man in Formula One history to win six races in a row. Italian Alberto Ascari won nine races in a row 1952 and 1953, Schumacher is currently tied for second place with five successive wins with Britons Jim Clark and Nigel Mansell and Australian Jack Brabham.
Schumacher won the last four 2000 races and continued in similar fashion this year with first place in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix March 4. "Everything is possible, but for now it is all just speculation as you can never predict how the race will end," said Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn.
Todt said earlier in the week that the 2001 car is "even better than last year's Ferrari," but major rivals McLaren-Mercedes are out to spoil the show and get their first top spot on the Sepang podium. "I am ready for the next round and fully concentrating on winning my first points of the season," said the 1998 and 1999 world champion Mika Hakkinen, who failed to finish in Melbourne.
Teammate David Coulthard, who is seeking his first world title, badly wants to improve from his runner-up finishes March 4 at Albert Park March and also last year in Sepang. The Melbourne race also saw the tragic death of a track marshal after a crash involving Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher, but owing to what are seen as almost impeccable safety measures, a similar tragedy is not expected in Sepang.
"All drivers feel very safe on this course," said French veteran Jean Alesi of the Prost team. Ralf Schumacher added: "It is one of the most modern circuits in the Formula One calendar. The safety measures are up to the highest standards." The world governing body FIA, meanwhile, will be watching the Sepang race extra closely, most notably the cars' speed in the turns. The FIA has made efforts to slow the cars down to prevent high-speed accidents like on March 4, but has not fully succeeded.
The race weekend starts with Friday's two free practice sessions, continues with Saturday's qualifying and culminates in Sunday's 56- lap race over 310.408km. The race is so far not sold out.
