Security issues overshadow tense town hall gathering in Jerusalem

Jerusalem - A heated town hall meeting moderated by American TV news anchor Ted Koppel was delayed for more than two hours by a disagreement over whether Israeli bodyguards could bring their weapons into a carefully selected venue _ a YMCA that straddles east and west Jerusalem.

Koppel, the host of ABC's "Nightline," had invited three Palestinian and three Israeli officials to participate in a special town hall-style gathering Tuesday for the late-night U.S. TV news program. Invitations were also issued to about 100 people representing all sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which spiraled into violence nearly two weeks ago. But 45 minutes after the meeting was scheduled to begin, Bishop Biah Abu el-Assal, whose diocese operates the YMCA, appeared on stage and announced that two of the Israeli panelists _ Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh and Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert _ had insisted on bringing armed bodyguards into the building, something strictly prohibited by the organization. "This is not a battlefield," the bishop said. The old limestone building is situated on what is known as the "Green Line," where the pre-1967 Israeli-Jordanian border sliced through Jerusalem. Palestinians want the eastern half of Jerusalem as a future capital while Israel claims sovereignty over the entire city. With the audience wondering whether the event would take place, Koppel came out half an hour later and said Israeli security feared there were guns in the center. He suggested a compromise: everyone would evacuate the building, the bodyguards would search the area, and the guests would make a second pass through metal detectors at the entrance. Angry voices immediately erupted from the audience. "Palestinians are discriminated against every day. Why should it happen here, too?" one woman shouted. An Israeli on the other side of the room yelled back: "They don't trust me either. It's procedure, not discrimination." Finally, the three Arab guests _ senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, spokeswoman Hanan Ashrawi and Israeli Arab parliament member Azmi Bishara _ walked onto the stage to loud applause. They were followed only by Naomi Hazan, deputy speaker of the Israeli parliament. Sneh and Olmert did not appear and Koppel said the security dispute was not resolved. "If they insist on bringing in security people with guns, I have no alternative but to disinvite Mr. Olmert and Mr. Sneh," Koppel said. A few minutes later however, as the host was about to record his introductory segment, Olmert and Sneh walked onto the stage and the taping began. During a tense hour, strong emotions gave way to shouting matches as guests on each side waved their fingers and blamed one another for the violence that has killed 88 people and injured almost 2,000 over 13 days. Finally Hazan broke in: "This is not the way to discuss really serious issues." But the male guests used their final words to again trade accusations and blame. Koppel closed the meeting by suggesting that the intense debate would give viewers "a small sense of the degree of passion that exists, the anguish that exists, the anger that exists."
