Singapore officials alert Malaysia of disease death

Singapore - Public health authorities alerted their counterparts in Malaysia on Thursday after finding a 4-year-old Singapore boy who died of hand, foot and mouth disease had visited relatives in the southern state of Johor.

The city-state's special task force on the contagious virus found three families had travelled to Pontian to visit the deceased child's grandmother between December 23 and 26.

The death of the child on Wednesday was the first from hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) since four deaths in Singapore triggered the closure of all childcare facilities in the city-state during October. Cases of infection soared over 2,000 before the cycle of transmission was broken. The Department of Pathology at Singapore General Hospital has identified one of the several viruses associated with HFMD from the dead boy.

"Four other children, including one who is a resident in Pontian, also developed HFMD-like illness," the task force composing four ministries said in a statement. Either "the children went to Pontian in good health and were exposed to the virus there or some of the children in the Singapore group were already infected before they went to Pontian," the task force said.

Altogether eight children ranging from 3 months to 7 years old were confined at the KK Women's and Children's Hospital. The outbreak last year prompted the two-week closure on October 1 of all kindergartens and childcare facilities to stop the transmission of the virus spread by bodily fluids such as saliva, urine and mucus.

The Singapore facilities reopened under a strict new hygiene regime mandated by the task force including daily disinfection of toys, utensils and the premises. Officers from the Quarantine and Epidemiology Department have visited pre-school centres attended by children who have come down with the disease.

"All observe good hygiene and no children were found to show signs of possible HFMD infection," the task force said.
