Thousands rally in the Philippines to protest banning of sex film

Manila - Movie actors and actresses on Monday led thousands of people in a rally in the Philippines to protest the banning of an internationally acclaimed sex film.

The protesters accused President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo of curtailing freedom of expression by revoking the permit for public exhibition of "Live Show", a movie about men and women who perform live sex acts on stage in nightclubs. "The issue of freedom of expression affects everyone," said Nicanor Tiongson, who resigned last week as the country's chief censor following Arroyo's order to stop the showing of the film. "We have to fight for it."

Arroyo, a devout Roman Catholic, disallowed the showing of "Live Show" after Catholic Church leaders and other anti-pornography groups opposed the movie, which premiered at the Berlin International Filmfest last year. The protesters carried banners, saying "Yes to expression, no to suppression", and marched to Mendiola street in downtown Manila, a few metres away from the Malacanang presidential palace.

Six men wearing only briefs stood at the street's centre island to dramatize the protest. The demonstrators also criticised Church leaders and conservative groups for restoring "the vicious act" of strict film censorship in Asia's only predominantly Roman Catholic country.

"They have not only applied censorship on the movie Live Show, but most especially they are trying to pressure the film-makers to deny the Filipino people their right to see the truth," the Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines said in a statement. "What the ultraconservatives want is for us to be blind to the realities around us," it added.

Leftist groups backed the protest and criticised Arroyo for succumbing to the pressures of the Catholic Church, which played a key role in miltitary-backed mass uprising that swept her into power and ousted former president Joseph Estrada on January 20. Elmer Labog, secretary general of the leftist labour group May One Movement (KMU), said Arroyo is neglecting the people who were behind the uprising in a bid to ensure the continued support of the Catholic Church and the military.

"'Live Show' is not a lewd film," he said. "It is a movie that exposes poverty and the hypocrisy of the affluent in society." Michelle Licudine, a spokeswoman for Sanlakas group (One Strength), added that Arroyo should realize that stripping the Filipino people of their right to free expression is more immoral than watching a film that highlights the ills of the society.

On Saturday, Arroyo stressed that the ban on "Live Show" is "non-negotiable". "We cannot allow the gains of the people power (mass uprising) to be eroded by immorality," she said. "In truth, we have launched a moral revolution at the very top and we intend to sustain this revolution."
